Post-Game Comments From Head Coach Grant Asher On Titan YouTube
On a spring day that brought sunshine and temperatures near 60, history was made at UDM as the men's tennis team dominated Chicago State, 7-0, in the first-ever collegiate match played outdoors at the Titan Tennis Complex.
“It is great to get on campus for our first match and great to get a victory,” said head coach
Grant Asher. “We are happy to get some confidence going into Ohio State on Thursday.”
The win was the second straight for Detroit, which improved to 6-5 on the season, while the shorthanded Cougars fell to 0-8.
The Titans took it to CSU right from the start winning both contested doubles matches. Senior
Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) and freshman
Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) won decisively in their match at No. 2, 8-0, while senior
Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and freshman
Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1.
UDM then rolled past Chicago State in singles, winning four of the matches in straight sets without losing a point.
Troy defeated Jerrick Boone, sophomore
Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) ousted Michael Chew, Latosinsky downed Uri Kuyoro and Serrano beat Jonathon Majors, all by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
In the most competitive match on the day, Necajevs picked up his 22nd singles win of the season, upending Ivan Mojsejev, 6-3, 6-0.
The Titan Tennis complex was completed in the fall of 2008, but weather did not permit a collegiate match to be played all of last season. The facility features eight hard courts and a viewing pavilion, as well as an additional athletic field adjacent to the complex.
The venue also serves as home for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy boy's tennis team, as U of D Jesuit was a major financial contributor to the overall project.
The Titans will now get ready for an opportunity to play one of the top teams in the country as Detroit squares off against No. 4 Ohio State in Columbus on Thursday. Match time is slated for 5:00 p.m., and fans can follow all the action by
