Women's Tennis Captures 4-3 Victory Over Butler

Match Results (in pdf)

Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) came up clutch in Detroit's match against Butler Saturday evening as her win at No. 1 singles was the deciding factor in the Titans' 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs at the Butler Tennis Bubble.

This marks UDM's (3-9, 2-0 HL) second straight Horizon League win and this was Butler's (5-8, 0-1 HL) first conference match of the season.

For the second match in a row, the Titans had to come back from a one-point deficit as their opponent won the doubles point. Freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) won the first point for the Titans as she defeated Brittany Farmer at No. 5 (6-4, 6-2) and then sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) captured a point at No. 2 against Natalie Jaimes (7-5, 6-1).

Junior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) came up short at the No. 2 slot against Becky Jenkins (7-5, 6-3), while senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) lost her first set against Molly Casperson at No. 3, but rebounded with wins of 6-2 and 6-3 for Detroit's third point of the evening. After freshman Victoria Baca (Quito, Ecuador/El Sauce) lost at No. 6, it came down to Espinosa versus Gabriella Bobrowski. Salas dropped the first set, 4-6, and then fought through the second set with a 7-5 win and then helped give UDM its second consecutive victory with a 6-2 win in the final set.

The last time these two teams met was in the Horizon League Championship Semi-Finals where No. 3 Detroit edged No. 2 Butler, 4-3, on April 25, 2009 in Indianapolis.

The Titans will return to action when they host Valparaiso on Saturday, March 27 at 5 p.m.
