Titans’ Comeback Attempt Falls Short

Box Score

Detroit forced a decisive match-point at No. 3 singles, but just could not complete its' full comeback effort on Thursday as the Titan men's tennis team was edged by UIC, 4-3, at the Franklin Athletic Club.

Freshman Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) was locked up in a grueling head to head bout falling in the first set, 6-3, before forcing the third set with a 6-4 tally. In the final set that would decide the winner of the conference affair, Latosinsky fell behind early and was just not able to get the match in his favor, eventually losing 6-3.

The Titans forced an exciting singles finish after dropping two of the three doubles matches. The lone win came from the red, white and blue duo of Latosinsky and freshman Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame), who cruised to an 8-2 victory. The other two spots came down to the very end, but UDM lost a close 8-6 decision in the second spot and a heartbreaking 9-8 (4) match at No. 1.

Detroit started the singles with a win at No. 5 from sophomore Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams), who upended Camilo Giraldo, 6-1, 6-2.

After falling behind in the match 3-2 with UIC winning at No. 6 and No. 2, UDM posted back to back triumphs at No. 4 and No. 1. Serrano started the Titan rally outlasting Nate Kirk, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, while senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) upended Sebastian Lystad in a hotly contested battle in the top position, 6-4, 7-5.

The Titans will now look to get back on track tomorrow when UDM host Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club.
