Gritty Titans Battle UIC To The End

Box Score in pdf.

It was a valiant effort given by the Detroit women's tennis team, but the red, white and blue could not pull off a win against UIC, as the Titans were turned away, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon in a showdown for first place in the Horizon League.

The loss drops UDM to 4-10 on the season and 3-1 in the league, while the Flames moved to 13-3, 3-0 in the HL.

The only win on the day came from the racquet of sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) at No. 3 singles, as she disposed of UIC's Kristen McPhillips, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.

Detroit suffered two tough setbacks at No. 5 and 6 as junior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) fell, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) was downed, 6-4, 7-5 .

In doubles, the Titan tandem of senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and sophomore Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) was locked in a see-saw affair, but the Titans eventually pulled out an 8-7 (8) victory in the second post.

The Titans will have a week off before their next action when they host in-state rival Oakland on Monday, April 5. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., but the location of the contest is still to be determined with the possibility of playing outdoors on the Titan Tennis Complex if the weather cooperates.
