Men’s Tennis Routs IUPUI, 6-1

Box Score

The Detroit men's tennis team took five singles matches en route to a decisive 6-1 victory over IUPUI on Saturday on a neutral court in East Lansing.

The Titans evened their record to 5-5 on the season and have now won four of their last five matches, while the Jaguars fell to 1-12.

UDM started by taking two of three matches in doubles to earn the point as senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and freshman Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) won at No. 1, 8-2, while freshmen Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) and Russ Kovar (Ft. Gratiot, MI/Port Huron Northern) held off their opponent for a 9-7 decision at No. 3.

It was more Titan wins in singles as Necajevs quickly dispatched his foe at the top position, 6-1, 6-1, with fellow senior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) adding a sweep of his own at No. 3 (6-4, 6-4).

Sophomore Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) rebounded from getting blanked in the first set to pick up a victory as he raced back to take the next two, 7-5, 10-7, in the fourth slot, while freshman Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) earned a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 5. Cheung closed out his perfect day with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, score at No. 6.

Detroit will now make up its postponed match earlier in the season against Chicago State its next time out on Tuesday, March 16. Match time is set for 11:00 a.m., at the Franklin Athletic Center in Southfield.
