For the third time in the last four matches, the Detroit women's tennis team pitched a shutout as the Titans grounded the Green Bay Phoenix, 7-0, on the road on Saturday night.
The win moves UDM to 6-10 on the season and 4-1 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay concluded the regular season with a 6-13 ledger and a 4-4 mark in the conference.
The Titans dominated right from the start taking all three matches in doubles. At No. 1, the duo of freshman
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) won 8-5, while senior
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and sophomore
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) took care of business at No. 2, 8-3. Detroit closed out team play with an 8-5 tally at No. 3 from the tandem of junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) and freshman
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South).
In singles, the Titans had to fight through some tough third sets and tiebreakers, but UDM was able to come out on top in all six bouts.
Weldon had the easiest time on the day, taking out Laura Bartingale, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, while Sjoberg-Sundstrom downed Jennifer Bradfield, 6-2, 6-1, in the second spot. Flankova held on to win the first set, 7-5, before closing out the No. 4 position, 6-2, against Lauryn Grimando.
The top spot saw Salas split the first two sets (6-3, 1-6) before edging Emily Lawent, 10-7, in the third. Cornwell had a great comeback at No. 3, earning a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 10-5 decision over Morgan Weuve, and Capuano had a comeback effort of her own in defeating Maria Anderson, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-1.
The red, white and blue will stay in the state of Wisconsin as the Titans play at Milwaukee tomorrow in a match schedule for 9:00 a.m.
