The Detroit Titans men's tennis team did what it needed to do in order to make the Horizon League Championships as UDM iced the Penguins, 5-2, on Senior Day on Sunday.
After the match, the Titans honored their two seniors on the men's team in
Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and
Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) along with
Svetlana Flankova of the women's program.
The win moved Detroit to 8-11 on the year and 2-5 in the conference. With Valparaiso (4-12, 2-4 HL) playing Butler today, a Valpo loss would give the Titans the sixth seed in the upcoming championships based on a head to head tiebreaker with the Crusaders.
The Titans took control right from the start in winning all three doubles matches.
Necajevs and freshman
Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) won at No. 1, 8-6, a score also posted by the No. 2 Titan tandem of Troy and sophomore
Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams). On court three, freshmen
Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) and
Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) cruised to an 8-2 victory.
In singles, Necajevs improved to 29-4 on the year with a dominating 6-3, 6-2 triumph. He now owns a 54-8 singles mark as a Titan and completed his second-straight perfect season in conference play with another 7-0 record.
Troy garnered the match at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0, for his 41st career win, while Tolomei (6-0, 6-2) and Cheung (6-1, 6-0) won their matches at 5 and 6, respectively.
The Horizon League Championships will begin on Friday at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The top two seeds will have a bye on the first day of play with the No. 3 seed taking on the sixth seed and No. 5 playing No. 4.
