Detroit tuned up for the upcoming Horizon League Championships on Sunday with a convincing 6-1 win over Youngstown State at the Titan Tennis Complex.
The win moved Detroit to 8-11 overall, a record that was achieved after starting the year at 0-7. The Titans also finished the regular season at 6-2 in the Horizon League.
Prior to the match, the Titans honored their lone senior in
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) along with two seniors on the men's side in
Pjotrs Necajevs and
Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice).
Detroit won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests.The Titans dominated singles, especially in the last three positions. Freshman
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) had an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory, while junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) took No. 5, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, it was the 66th singles win in Flankova's career as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) had a great effort at No. 2 dropping the first set, 1-6, before recovering for a 6-4, 10-6 tally. Sophomore
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) also rallied at No. 3 to win 7-6 (5), 6-3.
In doubles, freshman
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and Cornwell teamed for an 8-3 triumph. Sjoberg-Sundstrom and Flankova downed their counterparts, 8-4, while the Titan duo of Capuano and Weldon were victorious, 8-3.
The Horizon League Championships will begin on Friday at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The top two seeds will have a bye on the first day of play that will see the third-seeded Titans taking on the sixth seed Green Bay Phoenix.
