A five-hour weather delay couldn't stop the Detroit men's golf team as the Titans expanded on their two-round one-stroke lead to win their seventh Horizon League Championship by six strokes over Green Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Kearney Hill Links in Lexington, KY. The win gives UDM the automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.
Detroit totaled an 875 (295-292-288) in the three-round event, which included a tournament-best 288 for even par in round three. The Titans won the event fending off the Phoenix (881), who had a three-stroke lead after round one, but shot a 5-over 293 on the day. Youngstown State (891) and Wright State (894) were a distant third and fourth, respectively.
Besides the championship trophy, three Titans were honored by the league as senior
David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) was named the HL Player of the Year. The award also marked the fourth time in his career that he was named All-Horizon League. Joining him on the All-League team for the first time in his career was junior
Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas), while head coach
Mark Engel was honored along with Green Bay's Bill Lindmark as Co-Coaches of the Year.
Detroit was led in round three by freshman
Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross), who finished tied for 10th with a 222 (79-74-69), as the rookie play brilliantly, ending the day with a 3-under 69. That included four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey.
Overall, Pronk and junior
Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek) were named to the All-Tournament team after finishing in a three-way tie for third, carding a 217. Pronk posted a bogey free 2-under 70 in round three to go with his 72-75 output on Monday, while Clarridge ended with a 73 following his 75-69 effort.
Byrne took a share of 15th with a final score of 224 (73-75-76), while senior
Brian Sparks (Shelby Township, MI/Lutheran North) placed 22th tallying a 229 (75-74-80).
