Make it 13 straight times for the Detroit women's tennis team over Oakland as the Titans powered their way to a 7-0 sweep over the Golden Grizzlies on Monday afternoon on the Titan Tennis Complex.
UDM (5-10) made quick work of OU (1-11) in doubles, winning all three matches in less than 40 minutes. Sophomore
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) and
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) swept No. 1, 8-0, while senior
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and sophomore
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) claimed an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Junior
Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) and freshman
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) finished off team play, cruising to an 8-2 win.
In singles, Detroit held firm, winning all six matches in straight set sweeps. Weldon dominated her opponent at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph, while Flankova dropped just one point at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. Sjoberg-Sundstrom also was impressive with a 6-0, 6-2 tally in the second position.
Espinosa downed Oakland's No. 1, 6-2, 6-2, while Cornwell (6-3, 6-1) and freshman
Victoria Baca (Quito, Ecuador/El Sauce) (6-2, 6-1) rounded out the Titan wins on the day at No. 3 and 6, respectively.
Detroit will now finish the regular season with four conference matches, beginning with a trip to Wisconsin to face Green Bay on Friday and Milwaukee on Saturday.
