Men’s Tennis Loses Heartbreaker At Green Bay

Box Score

Senior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) and freshman Cesar Escobar Serrano (Merliot, El Salvador/Educame) came up with singles wins, but the Titans were just not able to get that last point as UDM dropped a 4-3 decision at Green Bay on Friday evening.

Detroit (7-10, 1-4 HL) made the long trek to Green Bay (12-8, 4-3 HL) and came out firing on all cylinders sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Patrick Troy (Beverly Hills, MI/Brother Rice) and Serrano were dominant at No. 2, winning the match, 8-2. Meanwhile, the duo of Necajevs and freshman Alex Latosinsky (Sarnia, ON/St. Christopher's) and sophomore Nick Tolomei (Rochester, MI/Adams) and rookie Chris Cheung (Mississauga, ON/Erindale Secondary) captured their matches, 8-6, at No. 1 and 3, respectively.

The top Titan netter in the Horizon League, Necajevs went on to win his 27th match of the year, 6-3, 6-1, over Paul Swanson in the first position, while Serrano came back after dropping his first set, 6-2, to take the match, 6-2, 6-4, against Fabian Gogolin at No. 3.

UDM looked like it was going to pull it out but Tolomei was unable to secure his bout at No. 5 (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), while Troy battled his opponent in the fourth slot before succumbing to a 6-4, 7-5 setback.

Detroit will end the regular season with two important league matches next week as a berth into the conference championships will be on the line. The Titans will face Cleveland State on Saturday and Youngstown State on Senior Day, Sunday. Two wins will guarantee that the red, white and blue will play in the conference championships, while a win over Penguins and some help from the rest of the league against YSU and Valparaiso could also see Detroit get in with the sixth seed.
