UDM Men's Golf Team Receives National Academic Recognition

The Horizon League Champion Titan men's golf team was honored this week by the Golf Coaches Association of America for having one of the 10 highest Division I team grade point averages in the nation for 2009-10.

With a 3.58 team GPA, Detroit was joined as a Division I honoree by Brown, Butler, DePaul – which was recognized for having the highest recorded GPA at 3.66 – Duke, East Tennessee State, Gonzaga, Mercer, Seton Hall and Wofford. Each was accorded President's Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better. It's just the second year the honor has been bestowed by the GCAA and the Titans were recognized both times.

A total of 54 other Division I teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition.

“This is a great honor for our team,” said Mark Engel, who is entering his 21st season as the Titans' head coach. “Our team has consistently excelled in the class room while playing some tremendous golf at the same time. This good news is clearly a result of their hard work.”

Graduated senior David Byrne and 2010 juniors Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk were named All-America Scholars by the GCAA earlier this summer, and all three were also voted to the 2010 Horizon League All-Academic Golf Team.

The Titans, who won their record seventh Horizon League men's golf championship this year, open their fall schedule Sept. 10-11 at the Bruce Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State.
