Detroit Headed to Horizon League Playoffs

FINAL MATCH RESULTS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Titans secured a berth in the Horizon League playoffs as Detroit defeated Youngstown State 6-1 in the final match of the regular season Sunday.

Detroit (4-17, 4-4 Horizon League) topped the Penguins (5-13, 2-6 HL) and finished up the dual season as the fifth seed and will face Wright State in the Horizon League Tournament Apr. 21-23 in Indianapolis.

"We had a team goal a month ago to make the tournament and we did it," said interim women's head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.

"We did very well and the most important thing is that we played together as a team and showed good team chemistry."

Detroit has reached the Horizon League Finals the last two seasons falling to UIC both years. The Flames have captured 14 straight women's tennis championships in the conference.

Today's match saw the Titans capture the doubles point and five of six singles matches.

One of the doubles win came from senior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) who now has 65 career doubles victories tying her for the top mark in Titan women's tennis history with Annie Moore.

Weldon paired with freshman Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) to win 8-4 in the No. 3 spot for the duo's team-best fifth Horizon League doubles win. Freshmen Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") and Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) also won 8-1 at No 2.

In singles play, sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7), Strakhova, Halabi, and Weldon all recorded straight set victories over Youngstown State. Fernandes needed an extra tiebreaker in the second set for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) decision.

Three Titans finished the dual season with six singles victories as Espinosa, Weldon, Strakhova all tied for the team lead while Strakhova tallied a team-best five Horizon League wins. She won three out of four in the conference to end this year's campaign.

The Horizon League Tournament is scheduled for this weekend in Indianapolis and details on the schedule will be released on www.detroittitans.com as it becomes available.
