KETTERING, Ohio (10/23/2012) -- Once again, the Detroit men's golf team did not let a slow start dictate its play as the Titans came back to post one of the best rounds in the tournament and finished in a tie for third at the Dayton Fall Invitational.
Detroit took 10 strokes of its first-round score and posted a 293 in round two, ending with a 596 (303, 293). The 293 tied UDM's second best 18-hole score of the fall and was also tied for the second best round in the event. Oakland won the tournament with a 578, while IPFW was second tallying a 588.
“It was a good way to end the fall,” said head coach Mark Engel. “We need to work on some consistency and maturity out there on the course, but it was good ending on a high note.”
Freshman
Wil Wittmann kept up his first-round performance to finish in the top 10 with a 144 (70, 74), which included a 3-over 74 on the final 18. It was his second top-10 effort of the fall as he collected 24 pars – tied for third best in the field – and played the Par 4's to a 1-under, 3.95 average.
“Wil really ended the season well and it was good for him to play in the final group and get that experience,” said Engel. “I thought he really handled his own and played well with that group.”
Junior
Brendan Leonard shared 15th finishing with a career-low 148 (76, 72), which included a 1-over 72 in round two. It was his seventh career top-20 finish as he was among the leaders in Par 3 scoring with a 3.00 average.
Freshman
Austin Eccleton lowered his first collegiate round score by five shots, carding a 3-over 74 in the final round to finish tied for 41st with a 153 (79, 74), while freshman
Josh Shaw showed the most improvement from yesterday taking eight shots off his game to tally a 2-over 73, tying for 47th at 154 (81, 73).
The Dayton Fall Invitational concludes the fall campaign for Detroit as the Titans will now get ready for the spring season and the Horizon League Championship, set for April 26-28 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
