Tennis Conference Play Continues at Butler Saturday and Sunday

DETROIT -- The men's and women's tennis teams will continue Horizon League play this weekend as both will head to Butler and Wright State for weekend dual-matches. The women will take on Butler Saturday at 2:00 pm and Wright State Sunday at 10:00 am while the men will face Butler at 10:00 am on Saturday followed by a 2:00pm contest Sunday at Wright State to close out the weekend.

The Detroit (4-8, 1-1 Horizon League) women are coming off a 2-1 week after 5-4 win over Wayne State last Wednesday before opening Horizon League play on Friday night at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. The Titans fell 4-3 in that opener to Cleveland State but came back strong Saturday night hosting Youngstown State and earning a 6-1 defeat over the Penguins.

Senior Amanda Cornwell went 6-0 overall in that stretch and was named the Horizon League Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday. Cornwell went 6-0 overall cruising to a 3-0 record in singles matches. She also went 3-0 in doubles matches as she paired with Elena Strakhova in the No. 1 position as the two have now combined for wins in each of their last three matches.

Cornwell and Chloe Karoub have led the team in singles play this year as Karoub has posted a 7-5 dual-match record and Cornwell is at 6-6. Karoub has won her last six singles matches and seven of her last eight while Cornwell has victories in three straight singles matches and also in five of her last seven outings.

Butler is (4-11, 1-1 HL) split its first two Horizon League matches and have won two of the last three. The Bulldogs are coming off a 7-0 loss to the conference defending champions from UIC on Sunday but opened conference play a day earlier with a 7-0 defeat over Valparaiso. The Titans defeated the Bulldogs, 4-2, in the season finale last year in the third place match of the Horizon League Tournament but Detroit fell in the season match-up in Southfield by a 7-0 score.

Wright State (6-8, 1-1 HL) began conference play last weekend as splitting its first two matches. The Raiders opened up against the defending champion UIC Flames last Saturday falling by a 7-0 score.  The other match for Wright State came at Valparaiso who won 7-0. Of the eight losses for the Raiders, five came in a row to start the dual-match season. They added a sixth in their first seven contests meaning they have recorded wins in six of their last nine matches.

The Detroit men (5-11, 0-2 HL) will look to get in the conference win column and break a three-match losing streak. The Titans fell 4-3 to both Cleveland State and Youngstown State Friday and Saturday evening to begin the conference schedule.

Junior Cesar Escobar Serrano has won six straight singles matches and 11 of his last 12 to lead the team with an 11-4 record in dual-match play and a 15-8 overall total. Mike Basha and Chris Cheung were on a four-match win streak playing in the No. 1 doubles position prior to this past weekend's matches where they lost both 9-8 in tiebreakers, 10-8 against Youngtown State and 7-4 to Cleveland State.

Butler (3-13, 2-0 HL) boasts freshman Austin Woldmoe who captured the Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week award last week. The Bulldogs began conference play with identical 5-2 wins over Valparaiso and UIC last Friday and Saturday. The three Butler wins have come in the team's last three matches.

Wright State (13-3, 2-0 HL) has fell in just three dual-matches this spring dropping a 7-0 decision to Michigan State in the season opener, then falling 4-3 to Bradley in the third dual-match of the season and then Wednesday as the Musketeers from Xavier won a 5-2 match. The Raiders competed in a pair of road contests at UIC and Valparaiso to begin Horizon League matches as Wright State won both, 6-1.

The next matches for Detroit will be back in Michigan as both the men and the women will host Valparaiso and UIC in back-to-back doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday night. Keep checking DetroitTitans.com for finalized location and times for both of those events.
