DETROIT -- The Detroit Titans will host a pair of Horizon League tennis doubleheaders on campus at the
Titan Tennis Complex this weekend. Valparaiso and UIC will both make the trek to Detroit as the Titans will match up with Valparaiso Friday at 2pm and the men at 3pm while it will be UIC and Detroit Saturday with the women at 11am and the men at 1pm.
Saturday's women's match will also be senior day as the senior class will be honored prior to the contest.
The Detroit women's team (4-10, 1-3 Horizon League) is coming off a pair of road conference losses last weekend vs. Butler and Wright State.
Amanda Cornwell remains on a streak having captured five straight singles wins. Cornwell and
Chloe Karoub lead the team with identical 8-6 singles records in the dual-match season.
Valparaiso (4-9, 0-4 HL) has fallen to Green Bay, Wright State, Butler and Milwaukee in conference play in the spring. The Crusaders were in action last weekend in a pair of road contests as they were downed 6-1 at both Green Bay on Sunday and then Friday at Northern Illinois.
UIC (10-3, 3-0 HL) comes in as the defending Horizon League Champions. The Flames are defending champions for the past 15 straight years to be exact and have lost three matches in the spring thus far. UIC has dropped its three matches in 2012 at Wisconsin, 5-2, at Marquette, 4-3 and at Iowa, 6-1. The contests against Wisconsin and Marquette started the year for the Flames who have won their last eight outings.
On the men's side, Detroit (6-12, 1-3 HL) is coming off a split last weekend at Butler and Wright State. Saturday saw the Titans post a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs as
Mike Basha secured the final point in a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 singles win in the No. 4 position. Detroit posted wins at singles No. 3-No. 6 for its first conference win of the spring.
Pablo Nunez has the second-best singles mark on the team with an 8-7 record in dual-match play. A win In the No. 4 slot against Wright State was his second straight and third in four Horizon League contests.
Cesar Escobar Serrano owns the team lead with a 12-5 singles record.
Valparaiso (6-10, 0-3 HL) will try and break a six-match losing skid after last being in action Tuesday at IPFW falling 5-2. The Crusaders were also in road contests Friday and Sunday last weekend as they were on the wrong end of 7-0 decisions to both Bradley and Green Bay.
UIC (2-12, 0-3 HL) has posted victories over Washburn (Wichita, KS) on March 3 and Prairie View A & M (Prairie View, TX) on March 19 this year. The Flames have fallen in four straight including their last three, all against Horizon League opponents. UIC played at Green Bay on Saturday falling 6-1 and then hosted both Wright State (L 6-1) and Butler (L 5-2) one weekend earlier.
The Detroit women will wrap up its dual-match season on the road as they will head to Wisconsin to take on Green Bay on April 20 and Milwaukee on April 21. The men's team will wrap up the home portion of the schedule next weekend as they host Chicago State on Friday and IUPUI on Saturday. The matches are currently scheduled to be indoors at the Franklin Athletic Club but check DetroitTitans.com for an update as weather could move the dual-matches outdoors and on campus.
