Sevierville, Tenn. (3/19/2013) --
A pair of Titans earned top-12 scores and Detroit made up a few strokes on the field as the rain-shortened Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate came to an end on Tuesday afternoon at the Sevierville Golf Club's River Course.

“I was very happy with the team today,” said head coach Mark Engel. “I think we played better overall considering the course was a lot tougher and wet after yesterday.”

Detroit claimed sixth in the event – which was originally set for 54 holes until rain washed out play yesterday – with a 617 (308-309), just four shots out of fifth. UT Martin won the tournament with a 593.

Junior Brendan Leonard and senior Simon Reyers were the leaders for the Titans on the day. Leonard tallied a 3-over 75 in round one and a 1-over in the second to tie for eighth with a 148 scorecard. He tied for the tournament high with eight birdies and also led the field with a -3, 4.63 average on the course's par 5's.

Reyers was just one shot behind his teammate and shared 12th place after totaling a 149 (74-75). His 2-over 74 on the opening 18 was the second best round for the Titans and he led the team and was third in the field with 26 pars.

“Our two leaders led us,” said Coach Engel. “Simon and Lenny both played very well and they were the two leaders that we expect them to be, especially with a young line-up.”

Three freshmen comprised the rest of the scoring five for Detroit as Austin Eccleton tied for 46th with a 160 (80-80), while Wil Wittmann shot a 79 in round one and an 83 on the second 18 to tie for 52nd at 162.

Aaron Knutson ended the event by carding a 163 for 56th. Knutson's tournament provided some great moments as he tallied an ace in the first round on the par 3, 13th hole and also had the only eagle for Detroit. The hole-in-one was the second of his playing career.

“It was a down-hill par 3 and I was just trying to hit a good shot and get close to the hole,” said Knutson. “I shot last in the group and I was able to see what the others did. I was kind of shocked because I just wanted to get in close and then it rolled in.”

Playing as an individual, rookie Josh Shaw took off eight strokes between rounds, taking 57th with a 164 (86-78).

Detroit will have a couple of weeks off before the Titans compete in their next event, the NYX Hoosier Invitational, held at the IU Championship Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind., from April 6-7. UDM placed fourth at Indiana last year.
