BLUFFTON, S.C. (3/7/2013) -- The Titans shrugged off a windy start to their spring campaign and got all 36 holes in as the Colleton River Collegiate came to an end on Thursday. The event – hosted by Michigan State – was played at the Par 72, 7365-yard Colleton River Plantation Club's Dye Course.
"We played better in the second round, but we just have to learn how to play tournaments again and think our way around all 36 holes," said head coach Mark Engel. "We did some good things out there and I'm glad we can get out quickly again at Tennessee."
Senior
Simon Reyers was the low man for the Titans, finishing in a tie for 12th with a 235 (84-74-77), which included a 2-over 74 to begin the day.
Junior
Brendan Leonard tallied the best round for the Titans in the event with a 1-under 71 in round two and claimed a share of 16th with a 238 (84-71-83). Freshman
Wil Wittmann added an 80 and an 82 on day two for a 244 (82-80-82) scorecard, while rookie
Austin Eccleton ended the tournament with a 248 (88-82-78), taking six strokes off his first round score and another four on the final 18.
Freshman
Aaron Knutson completely turned around his tournament firing an 81 in round two and a 78 on the final 18 for a 17-shot improvement over his opening round.
"He (Leonard) showed signs of progress all week long," said Coach Engel. "Aaron started thinking positive and that really worked out on the course."
Leonard was tied for seventh in the tournament with six birdies and Reyers led UDM with 30 pars over the three rounds. Eccleton topped the team averaging a 4.92 on par 5's and Reyers averaged 4.37 on par 4's to lead UDM.
Detroit totaled a 964 (337-307-320) in the event. Penn State won with a 916 (317-307-292), while Michigan (325-301-301) and MSU (330-298-299) tied for second.
The Titans will have almost two weeks off before their next competition as Detroit competes in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, held at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
