Titans Upset #3 Youngstown in Opening Round

INDIANAPOLIS (4/26/13) -
The sixth seeded University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team upset third seeded Youngstown State, 4-2, Friday morning in the first round of the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis.
 
"I'm so excited and proud of this group of young men! " said head coach Grant Asher. "They have again pushed our program into uncharted territory upsetting the third seed and making our first semifinals. We are finally healthy and peaking at the right time winning five out of the last six matches."

Pablo Nunez and Jay Joshi defeated their opponent quickly at second doubles, 8-3, and Alex Latosinsky and Cesar Escobar Serrano clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at first doubles to give UDM the one-point advantage going into singles play.
 
Nunez won his singles match at fourth singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and Serrano took his match at second singles, 6-3, 7-6. YSU took first and fifth singles in straight sets and had a one point lead in the third set of sixth singles. After dropping the first set, Latosinsky battled back to clinch the his match at third singles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, and give UDM the fourth point it needed to advance to the next round.

"We are starting to understand the meaning of synergy," said Asher. "We are able to sustain a level of focus and energy consistently through the match, this has made us a tougher team. These guys are making history and we are not done."
 
This match marks the first postseason win for Detroit since the program was reinstated in 2008.
 
The Titans will now face second seeded Cleveland State on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the West Indy Racquet Club.
