HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/28/2013) --
The Detroit men's golf team never quit and led by its senior captain and two great rounds from a pair of freshmen, the Titans moved all the way up to third place as the 2013 Men's Golf Horizon League Championship concluded on Sunday at the Par 72, 6,770-yard El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Titans began the event with a 311 on Friday and in fifth place, but showing hard work, dedication and perseverance, UDM battled throughout the weekend, totaling a 299 yesterday and a 291 today to finish with a 901. Valparaiso won the title with an 884, while Cleveland State claimed runner-up totaling an 888

“I felt really good for the guys to finish this strong,” said head coach Mark Engel. “I wish we could get a mulligan back for that first round, really just the start of it, but they continued to play hard and passed two good teams to finish third.”

Detroit had two players earn Horizon League All-Tournament in senior Simon Reyers and junior Brendan Leonard, who both tied for fifth with a 223, just a shot out of third. Reyers ended a great career with a 1-under 71 on Sunday and that came after he lowered his first-round score of 78 to 74 yesterday. He began his final collegiate round with eight-straight pars and tallied 15 on the day along with birdies on 10 and 14.

Reyers finished his career playing 103 rounds of golf and posting a 75.3 career average, good for sixth in Titan history, and had 18 top-20 finishes and nine top-10 efforts. He was All-Horizon League as a junior and a four-year member of the Detroit Athletic Director's Honor Roll and a GCAA All-America Scholar in 2012.

“We have had a lot of good players come through here, but I don't know how many have cared as much for the team as Simon has,” said Coach Engel. “I was glad he made his final putt for par to get under for the day and he was a great captain and leader for us.”

Leonard carded a 76 on the final 18 holes and recovered from a slow start with birdies on 13 and 18. The HL All-Tournament status was the first of his career and he ended his junior season with a 74.5 average, good for 13th in school history.

Freshmen Austin Eccleton and Wil Wittmann were on their game today as the rookies ended the season with an even-par 72 on the final 18. Wittmann started the day with an eagle on the Par 5 first hole and added birdies on 2 and 7 along with tallying 11 pars to tie for 23rd with a 231 (80-79-72).

Eccleton was three over on his first seven holes today, but then put up some of the best numbers in the championship going three under on his final 11 holes with three birdies and eight pars, and he also finished in 23rd place with a 231 (77-82-72)

“All of the freshmen had good rounds for us and considering that they have never seen these courses, especially this one, today was great for us,” said Coach Engel. “Look at the scores they put up today and with Lenny (Brendan) coming back, it just shows what we have here.”

Freshman Josh Shaw rounded out the Titan line-up with an 82 on Sunday and shared 30th with a 237 (80-75-82).

The 291 was the 12th time on the year UDM totaled a score under 300 and the seventh time in the last eight rounds of golf on the season. The third-place finish also marked the 11th time in the past 15 years that the Titans have been in the top three at the championship.
