DETROIT (1/10/2014) --
The 2014 duel tennis season is underway as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo to start things off on Friday, but UDM ran into a tough Western Michigan squad falling, 7-0, at University Arena.

Sophomore Rafael Orantes had the only winning set on the day as Detroit battled the Broncos right from the start, losing the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 defeats at No. 2 and No. 3.

In singles, Orantes dropped his first set, 6-3, before rallying to win the second frame, 6-2, but he just could not pull off the comeback as he was downed 10-7 in the third-set tiebreaker at No. 4.

Senior Bobby Cawood nearly won his match at No. 2 as he was upended, 6-4, 6-5 (3), while freshman Ismail Kadyrov rebounded from a slow start to nearly force a third set in losing 6-0, 6-5 (5). Junior Jay Joshi also gave it his all at No. 3 in a 6-4, 6-4 setback.

The Titans will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 11, as the red, white and blue face No. 47 Michigan State on the road.
