KETTERING, Ohio (10/21/2014) --
Beating 11 other teams – including four Horizon League foes – was a good way to end the fall season as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished up play at the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Tuesday.

The event was hosted by Dayton at the Par 71, 7,100-yard NCR Country Club's South Course.

"We were in contention for wins in our last two tournaments so the guys are playing well right now," said head coach Luke LaFave '02. "Kyle (Gaines) and Wil (Wittmann) are the leaders of our team and they played well and we beat some good teams on definitely the best course we have played on all fall."

UDM posted a 301 on the final 18 to place fourth with a 599 (298-301), just two shots out of second and ahead of HL rivals Oakland, Wright State, Youngstown State and Valparaiso.

Gaines once again was the low man for the Titans – something he did in all four fall events – claiming fourth with a 144 (71-73), just one stroke away from tying his career best. It was his sixth career top-10 finish as he recorded 24 pars and an eagle. Gaines was also top 12 in Par 3 (E, 3.00), Par 4 (+4, 4.18) and Par 5 (-2, 4.67) scoring average.

"Kyle is just so steady and he had a chance at the end, but his last hole didn't go as planned," said Coach LaFave. "He keeps getting closer to a win and sometimes you just have to learn how to win."

Junior Wil Wittmann shared 10th carding a 148 (75-73), ending the tournament with a 2-over 73 on Tuesday. He also tied for the team lead with 24 pars.

Freshman Eric Macrow shot a 76 in the last round and tied for 33rd overall with a 153. The rookie would tie for the tournament lead with a 1-under, 2.88 average on the course's Par 3's.

Sophomore Spencer Lendzion led Detroit with five birdies in the two rounds and placed 58th with a 157 (75-82), while freshman Matt Zerbel registered a 160 (81-79) sharing 72nd.

Detroit ended the fall season with three out of its four events in the top four and will now get ready for the championship spring season. A spring schedule will be released in the near future.
