Detroit Women's Tennis Earns 4-3 Win Over Duquesne

AKRON, Ohio (2/22/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team won its fifth straight dual-match on Saturday with a 4-3 win over the Duquesne Dukes on neutral territory.  The teams met at the Towpath Racquet Club in Akron, Ohio.

Detroit (5-2) captured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to earn its first point over Duquesne (2-5). Sophomore Nino Sujashvili and senior Julia Fernandes won 8-5 at the No. 1 spot and senior Elena Strakhova and sophomore Valery Kulikovskaya paired up for an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles. 

Detroit then was able to snare the team win with victories at three of six singles.

It was a pair of seniors leading the way as Fernandes and Strakhova both won their singles matches. Fernandes played in the No. 4 spot capturing a 7-5, 6-2 win while Strakhova played in the No. 5 position earning a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory.

Kulikovskaya was the third Titan to earn a singles win as she held her own in the No. 6 position winning 6-4, 6-4. 

For its next match, Detroit will stay on the road but will again play at a neutral site. Detroit will play the Grand Canyon Antelopes out of the Western Athletic Conference in Phoenix, Arizona at Chicago State on Sunday with the match starting at 10:30 a.m. ET.
