SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (3/18/2014) – Senior
Brendan Leonard finished in the top 15 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team closed out its second tournament of the spring by taking ninth at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The event was hosted by Tennessee Tech at the Par 72, 6,928-yard Sevierville Golf Club and is named after the former Golden Eagles men's golf coach who lost his battle with cancer in 2008 at the age of 66.
Detroit tallied a 309 on the final 18 for a 905 (303-293-309) total, finishing ahead of southern schools Murray State and Tennessee State as well as Horizon League-rival Wright State. Tennessee – ranked No. 40 by Golfweek – won the event with an 853.
"We got a chance to play and that was the most important thing," said head coach Mark Engel. "We need to just keep competing and playing for every stroke because that is what we are going to see at the Horizon League Championship."
Leonard carded a 1-under 143 yesterday and finished with a 4-over 76 in the final round for a 3-over 219 showing and a share of 14th place. He led the Titans with 10 birdies and topped the competition on the Par 3's (-3, 2.75) as well as tying for 10th on the Par 5's (-2, 4.83).
"It was a great leaderboard with all those schools from the south and Lenny was a part of it," said Coach Engel. "We got a lot of good compliments from the coaches and staff on our play, especially since everyone knows what we have been dealing with the weather."
