Titans Drop Tough Match to Cleveland State

Match Results

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/29/2014) -- The third match of the Horizon League season did not go as planned for the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team as the Titans fell 4-3 in a close match to the Cleveland State Vikings Saturday at the Franklin Athletic Club.

The Titans (6-6, 1-2 Horizon League) started the night completely dominating the doubles portion of the match over Cleveland State (5-10, 2-0 HL). Sophomore Irina Slizovskaya and senior Julia Fernandes topped CSU 8-0 at No. 2 doubles first and sophomore Nino Sujashvili and freshman Viktoria Laskutova won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. The third doubles match went unfinished but with the two other wins, the Titans went up 1-0 in the match.

The singles matches began with three straight-set losses for Detroit to put the pressure on UDM down 3-1 and the Vikings needing just one of the remaining three singles wins to claim its second straight Horizon League victory.

Freshman Anna Davydova started the Titan rally with a big win at No. 5 singles as she won 6-2, 7-6 (1) with two singles matches yet to play that could decide the match.

The next crucial match came at No. 3 singles as sophomore Valeryia Kulikovskaya fell 6-4 in the first set but stormed back in the second to win 6-3 and force a third set. The final result would see Kulikovskaya fall 6-3 in the final set in a battle that secured the win for Cleveland State.

Fernandes persevered in her match at No. 4 singles being down 7-5 after the first set and worked towards a 7-6 win in set two with a 7-5 tiebreaker to force a third set and final tiebreaker. Fernandes won the tiebreaker 10-4 to take the final point of the night and bring the final score to 4-3.

Detroit will continue its home schedule with a second-straight doubleheader. The UDM men and women will both play Youngstown State on Sunday, March 30 with both match times scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. ET at the Franklin Athletic Club.
