SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/30/2014) -- It was a tough way to end the weekend for the Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team saw Youngstown State claim a nailbiter, 4-3, on Sunday night at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
The loss drops Detroit to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League, while Youngstown State moved to 4-11 and 1-2 in conference action.
Senior
Bobby Cawood and freshman
Patryk Koscielski teamed up for a win at doubles and also won their singles matches, while sophomore
Rafael Orantes was the other victor in individual action.
Cawood and Koscielski defeated Zeeshan Ismail and Sharvil Nawghare, 8-4, at No. 3 as they made the doubles point come down to the final match. That bout did not go the Titans way as junior
Jay Joshi and freshman
Ismail Kadyrov were edged, 8-7 (5), at No. 2 as YSU earned the doubles point.
Cawood went on to beat his counterpart, Sebastian Hagn, in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, at top singles, while Koscielski battled his foe in an exciting 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-6, triumph at No. 3.
Orantes also had to go the distance for the win as he rallied after dropping the first set for a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-6 score at the fourth position.
Freshman
Chance Conley took his opponent to a third set but fell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6, while Joshi (6-4, 6-4) and Kadyrov (6-3, 6-3) each fought hard in a pair of setbacks.
The red, white and blue will continue Horizon League play next weekend as Detroit visits Wright State on Saturday, April 5, with match time schedule for 3:00 p.m.
