Bobby Cawood tallied a pair of victories on Friday night, but the Titans were held off by a strong University of Chicago squad as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to the No. 30 Maroons on Friday night.
Chicago is a nationally ranked Division III team.
Cawood started the night by teaming with freshman
Patryk Koscielski for a thrilling 9-7 triumph over Ankur Bhargava and Gordon Zhang at No. 2, but that was the only doubles match the Titans win. Detroit had a chance at No. 1 as sophomore
Rafael Orantes and freshman
Chance Conley dropped an 8-5 affair.
In singles, Cawood garnered an easy 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while freshman
Ismail Kadyrov was able to upend Brian Sun at No. 4, 6-1, 7-5.
Orantes battled his counterpart at No. 3, but came up on the wrong side of an exciting 7-6 (4), 2-6, 10-2, bout and Conley fell at No. 5, 6-3, 6-3.
The red, white and blue will now get ready for a showdown with No. 6 Illinois on Sunday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m., at the Atkins Tennis Center.
