Detroit Drops Match At No. 6 Illinois On Sunday

URBANA, Ill. (3/9/2014) --
It was a monumental task that the Titans decided to pursue on Sunday as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team battled nationally ranked Illinois, falling to the sixth ranked Fighting Illini, 7-0, at the Atkins Tennis Center.

Detroit put forth a good effort on the night, losing two of the doubles matches by a 6-3 score. At the top spot, sophomore Rafael Orantes and freshman Chance Conley lost by that count as did the duo of senior Bobby Cawood and freshman Patryk Koscielski at No. 2.

In singles, Orantes was the closest to a win as he was upended 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.

Cawood took on 23rd-ranked Farris Gosea and suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback, while Koscielski was downed 6-0, 6-4 by No. 33 Tim Kopinski.

UDM will play two more road non-conference matches before Horizon League play as the Titans face Toledo on Friday and Michigan on Saturday.
