DETROIT (4/11/2014) -- It was a perfect day for tennis and the Titans took advantage playing outdoors for the first time this year as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team hosted Valparaiso on Friday afternoon at the Titan Tennis Courts at the James K. Campbell Complex.
Despite wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles and some feisty bouts in doubles, the Crusaders (16-6, 2-2 HL) were able to come into the Motor City and down UDM (3-13, 0-4 HL), 5-2.
Freshman
Patryk Koscielski was the winner at No. 3 as he picked up his team-high 11th victory with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Eric Honert. The win moved Koscielski to 2-2 in the Horizon League.
At No. 4, sophomore
Rafael Orantes cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Michael Savaglio to keep pace with the team lead in wins as he earned his 10th of the season and he is also 2-2 in league play.
Freshman
Ismail Kadyrov dropped his match at No. 5, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman
Matt White fell at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, the top Titan duo of Orantes and Koscielski was narrowly defeated 8-7 (4) at No. 1, while at No. 3, senior
Bobby Cawood and White were tied at 6-6 when the match was called after Valpo won in the second position.
Detroit will continue its weekend homestand on Sunday as the red, white and blue host UIC. If the weather cooperates, the Titans and Flames will play outdoors on campus at 1:30, but if rain does make its way, the match will be at 4:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
