Detroit Takes On Green Bay, IUPUI On Easter Weekend

HLN Detroit Interview With Koscielski

DETROIT (4/16/2014) --
The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team will have a busy last week of competition as the Titans will play Green Bay on the road on Friday and host IUPUI on Saturday on Senior Day.

The match against Green Bay will be on a neutral court as the Titans and Phoenix square off in Kalamazoo at 4:00 p.m. Detroit will then play the Jaguars on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., on campus at the Titan Tennis Courts on the James K. Campbell Complex or depending on weather, it may be moved indoors to the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield at 6:00 p.m.

Prior to the match against IUPUI, the Titans will honor their lone senior in Bobby Cawood. A senior transfer from Hope College, Cawood came to UDM for his final season of collegiate eligibility and has made an immediate impact as a leader and a player at No. 1 singles, where he has seven wins and is 3-2 in Horizon League play.

Detroit will look to end its season on a positive note as a victory by the red, white and blue could knock Green Bay from atop the standings, while a win on its home court on Saturday would be a great feeling for all.

Sophomore Rafael Orantes and freshman Patryk Koscielski are tied for the team lead for the Titans with 11 as Orantes is 3-2 in the HL at No. 4 and Koscielski is 2-3 in the league at No. 3.  In doubles, Cawood and Koscielski have combined to post a team-best four wins.

Green Bay is 14-7 on the season and 4-0 in the HL as it looks to win the regular season title with a pair of triumphs this weekend. In conference matches, the Phoenix has beat Valparaiso (6-1), UIC (7-0), Cleveland State (4-3) and Youngstown State (7-0).

Leo Gomez Islinger leads the team in singles with a 17-2 record and is 11-1 at No. 2, including 4-0 in the Horizon League.  Michael Tenzer is 14-4 and 4-0 in the league, while in doubles, the tandem of Howard Scott and Tenzer is 12-6 overall, all at No. 1.

IUPUI is 5-18 on the year and 2-2 in the Summit League. The Jaguars have played a couple of common opponents with the Titans falling to SIU-Edwardsville (4-3), Wright State (6-1), Northern Illinois (6-1) and IPFW (6-1).

Jason Jaruvang is their top singles player at 13-15, including a 7-7 record at No. 1. Three other IUPUI players have reached double digit in wins, while Jacob Bradley and Thomas Gans are 11-11 in doubles and 10-6 in the second position.
