RIVERDALE, N.Y. (4/19/2014) – It was a crucial game in the MAAC today and despite a comeback by the Titans, the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was downed by Manhattan, 6-5, on Saturday at Gaelic Park.

The loss drops Detroit to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC, but the red, white and blue are still alive for a conference tournament bid if it can beat Monmouth next week and get some help on what may come down to the tiebreaker rule in goals allowed.

Senior Tom Masterson and juniors Scott Drummond and Brandon Beauregard each had a goal and an assist, while senior Alex Maini finished with two assists. Freshman Jason Weber made 12 saves and Masterson also had a career-high three caused turnovers.

Manhattan (5-9, 3-2 MAAC) got on the board first with the only goal in the opening period and the Jaspers took a 2-0 lead at the 7:44 mark of the second. Detroit finally got on the scoreboard less than a minute later as Maini located junior Shayne Adams and he was able to find the back of the net.

Manhattan regained a two-goal lead, 3-1, but Beauregard fed Drummond who beat the keeper with 3:26 remaining and it was a 3-2 contest at the half.

The Titans were down by two again, 4-2, as Manhattan scored early in the third, but the red, white and blue posted three straight to jump out in front 5-4. Masterson started the run by setting up Beauregard for a marker and then he took a pass from Drummond and ripped one in to make it a 4-4 game with 4:18 on the clock in the third.

Detroit tallied another a minute later for its only lead on the day as Maini was able to spot sophomore Andy Hebden and the second-year Titan fired one in for a 5-4 advantage.

The Jaspers were able to recover and knot it at 5-5 at the 2:37 mark in the period and then they were able to get the game winner with 9:30 remaining. The Titans had a number of chances throughout the game and down the stretch, even going on a one-minute man-up, but some key stops by the Manhattan goalie was enough to keep UDM from tying it up.

Detroit was outshot, 37-24, but won the faceoff battle at 9-of-15.

Senior Tyler Corcoran was 9-of-13 on faceoffs with a team-high five ground balls. Junior Chris Shevins had two caused turnovers and two ground balls and sophomore Nick Melucci picked up three GB's.

The Titans will face MAAC newcomer and first-year program Monmouth on the road next Saturday with game time set for 1:00 p.m.

Game Notes:
Manhattan now leads the overall series, 4-2… UDM is 0-3 all-time against Manhattan at the Jaspers' home field… Corcoran's career high for faceoff wins is 11 against Quinnipiac in 2013… Detroit had an assist on all five of its goals… Masterson's previous career high in caused turnovers was two done three times… The 24 shots by Detroit was the fewest since UDM had 20 at Ohio State in 2013… Eight Titans hail from Long Island… The Titans were 0-of-1 with the man-up as they still lead the nation at 67.4% (29-of-43)… All three of UDM's losses in conference play have been by just one goal with two of those setbacks in overtime…
