KALAMAZOO, Mich. (2/1/2015) -- Sophomore
Anna Davydova moved her singles winning streak to five straight as she was the lone Titan to win on the day as the red, white and blue fell to No. 35 Tennessee, 6-1, on Sunday morning at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo.
Detroit dropped to 2-4 and 0-2 against ranked opponents as it lost to No. 20 Notre Dame earlier in the season. Tennessee moved to 5-1 on the year.
Playing fourth singles, Davydova had to fight back to keep her winning streak alive as she was routed in the first set, 6-0, before earning a 6-4 decision in the second. She was then ahead 2-0 in the third when Laurence Guevremont retired.
The win increased Davydova's record to a team-best 11-5 in singles.
UDM gave the ranked Volunteers a fight at a few other singles matches as junior
Irina Slizovskaya dropped a 7-5, 7-5, bout at No. 2, while sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova was upended, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5. At No. 6, sophomore
Nynke Van Der Goot lost a close 7-6 (5), 2-2 (5) match.
Tennessee opened the day with the doubles point taking two matches, with freshman
Sasha Nionova and junior Valeryia Kulikovskay having the tough task of facing #29 Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williamsm, falling 6-1 at the top spot.
Detroit will have another busy weekend ahead as the Titans' home opener is set for Friday, Feb. 6, against Toledo at 7:00 p.m., at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. UDM will then play at No. 75 Michigan State on Saturday.
