HOMEWOOD, Ill. (2/28/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team won its second-straight match on the weekend as the Titans served up a 4-3 victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon at the H-F Racquet Club.
The win evened Detroit's record to 5-5 and also ended Northern Iowa's seven-match winning streak as the Panthers dropped to 9-4.
Detroit took command right from the start taking the doubles point from UNI. Junior
Irina Slizovskaya and sophomore
Anna Davydova were victorious at No. 1, 6-4, while junior
Nino Sujashvili and sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova cruised to a 6-2 decision at No. 3.
In singles, Detroit won the first three completed singles matches to earn the victory before the Panthers claimed the other three bouts.
Sophomore
Nynke Van Der Goot was the first victor defeating Gisela Kemper, 6-3, 6-1, in the fifth position.
Slizovskaya then ousted Elvira Lopez, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2, and Laskutova recorded the clincher cruising past Sydney Wolfe, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5.
The Titans could have even raised the score a bit as freshman
Sasha Nionova was upended at No. 1, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (8), while
Valeryia Kulikovskaya fell at No. 3, 7-6 (6), 6-1, and Davydova was tripped up at fourth singles, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
The Titans will close out the weekend trip to Illinois by facing event host Chicago State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
