SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (3/21/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team began Horizon League play with a bang as the Titans hammered Green Bay, 7-0, on Saturday evening at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
The match was the Horizon League opener for both schools as Detroit moved to 9-7 on the year in winning its third-straight match, while Green Bay dropped to 0-9.
The triumph started with doubles play as junior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova won, 6-2, at No. 2. Junior
Irina Slizovskaya and sophomore
Anna Davydova were victorious at No. 1, 6-2, while junior
Nino Sujashvili and sophomore
Nynke Van Der Goot defeated their counterpart at No. 3, 6-4.
In singles, it was a clean sweep as Detroit didn't lose a single set in winning all six bouts.
Freshman
Sasha Nionova earned a win at top singles defeating Stephanie Londre, 6-3, 6-1, for her third-straight victory.
Slizovskaya upended Olivia Headford, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2, and Kulikovskaya cruised past Lauren Miketinac at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.
Davydova posted her team-high 18th win of the season in breezing past Maria Neff, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. It was also her fifth-straight triumph in singles.
Van Der Goot downed Samm Pedersen, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5 and Laskutova recorded a 6-2, 6-0 tally over Rachael Menos at No. 6.
The Titans will now look to remain perfect in conference play as they host the defending HL champion Milwaukee Panthers tomorrow, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. The match is part of a tennis doubleheader at the Franklin Athletic Club with the men taking on Michigan State at 8:00 p.m.
