Detroit Captures Key Road Win At Cleveland State

Box Score

WESTLAKE, Ohio (3/28/2015) --
The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team went on the road and came up with a huge win as the Titans sank the Cleveland State Vikings, 4-3, on Saturday night at the Paramount Tennis Club.

The win was the fifth straight for Detroit as the Titans improved to 11-7, 3-0 in the Horizon League. Cleveland State – the HL Preseason runner-up with three first-place votes – fell to 3-11, 1-1 in the conference.

The Titans won two matches in doubles and then three in singles to earn the road win over the Vikings, who made the Horizon League Championship last season.

Junior Nino Sujashvili and sophomore Viktoria Laskutova got the winning started with a convincing 6-1 victory at No. 2, while junior Valeryia Kulikovskaya and sophomore Nynke Van Der Goot claimed No. 3, 6-3.

At top doubles, junior Irina Slizovskaya and sophomore Anna Davydova nearly also had a win as the tandem was up, 5-2, before the match was called due to completion.

The Titans and Vikings then battled for singles supremacy, but it was Detroit who won out with Davydova starting the charge with a 6-1, 6-2 tally over Princess Gbadamosi at No. 4. The win was the seventh in a row for her and the eighth in her last 10 matches.

After the Vikings stormed back with wins at 2, 3 and 6, Sujashvili was able to hold off Jana Schober, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, at No. 5.

The magical fourth point then came from freshman and reigning HL Player of the Week Sasha Nionova as she was able to post a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Victoria Bensimon at the top of the line-up

The Titans will look to remain perfect in league play as they will get right back on the courts tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m., match at Youngstown State. It will be a tennis doubleheader as both the Detroit men and women face Youngstown State at the Boardman Tennis Club.
