ORLANDO, Fla. (3/6/2015) -- With some strong doubles play and key singles victories, the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was able to pull out a 4-2 triumph over Grand Valley State on Thursday night at the Lake Kane Tennis Center.
The win came after two tough defeats on Wednesday as Detroit (7-7) was edged by Presbyterian, 4-3, and Nova Southeastern, 5-1.
Against Grand Valley State – who is ranked No. 39 in NCAA Division II – Detroit won all three doubles matches. Junior
Irina Slizovskaya and sophomore
Anna Davydova earned an 8-3 tally at the top spot, while junior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and freshman
Sasha Nionova dominated their counterpart, 8-0, at No. 2. UDM made it a clean sweep as junior
Nino Sujashvili and sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova won their match, 8-3.
In singles, the Titans won the battle with victories at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5.
Nionova defeated Kali Phillips, 6-1, 6-4, at second singles. Davydova upended Alexa Sweeney, 6-3, 6-2, at the fourth spot and Sujashvili cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 5.
On Wednesday, March 4, UDM suited up for a doubleheader starting with a 4-3 setback against Presbyterian. It was a hotly contested match and time consuming as the Blue Hose surged ahead with four wins in singles.
At doubles, Slizovskaya and Davydova posted a 6-3 victory at the top position, while Sujashvili and Laskutova secured a 6-2 decision at No. 3.
The Titans and Blue Hose then fought hard in singles with three matches going to the third set, but the Titans could not get the clinching point. UDM earned wins with Slizovskaya beating Demi Henschel at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, and Davydova recording a 6-3, 6-2 mark over C.M. Andrews.
Against Nova Southeastern – who is ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II – Detroit fell behind early as it lost the doubles point with only Slizovskaya and Davydova coming up with an 8-6 win at No. 1. In singles play, the Sharks were able to win notching a couple of matches as Detroit was playing its second opponent of the day and was shorthanded with only five netters.
The Titans will wrap up their spring break business trip against Mount St. Mary's on Friday at 10:00 a.m.
