Final Results
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (4/12/2015) -- The final round of the regular season came to an end on Sunday and two Titans placed in the top 20 as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team finished up play at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational.
A day after shooting its third-best round of the season with a 312, Detroit carded a 317 in the final round to take sixth overall with a 629, tying for the third best 36-hole tournament on the year.
"We grinded it out there and we played today with Youngstown and Oakland so it was a great way to get ready for the Horizon League Championship," said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. "We have been playing the sophomores the last few events and they are playing a lot better."
Senior
Olivia Richards started the weekend with a season-low 74 on Saturday and followed that with a 77 today for a 151 card, sharing seventh place for her 18th career top-10 finish and moving past
Alainna Stefan '11 for the third most in school history. She now trails only Mandy Dupuis '08 (19) and
Lindsey Lammers ' 14 (25) in that category.
"Olivia led us this weekend, and we know what type of player she is," said Coach Ryan.
Richards tallied a team-high 23 pars and tied for the team and tournament lead with five birdies.
Sophomore
Sarah Thompson tied for 16th with a 156 (74-82), her seventh top-20 effort of the year. She also had five birdies on the weekend.
Sophomore
Brooke Sharpe took 33rd after tying her career-best with a 160 (81-79), which included a 79 on the final 18, one off her career low and her second score in the 70's on the year.
"Sarah had a call go against her that cost her two strokes, but she has been in the 70's three times in the last two tournaments," said Coach Ryan. "Brooke shot two 90's on this course last year and she ended today with a 79, so that shows you how far she has come."
Sophomore
Sarah Montone tied for 44th posting a 167 (83-84), while sophomore
Alexandra LeBlanc shared 50th with a 170 (91-79) after taking 12 strokes off her opening 18 score. Playing as an individual, senior
Jessica Mallender tied for 36th totaling a 162 (82-80).
"Sarah has lowered her scoring throughout this spring, and Alex just needs her putting to come around, but both have improved," added Coach Ryan.
The Titans will now get ready to defend their Horizon League Championship for the third-straight year as Detroit will next play at the league event from April 24-26 at the Mission Inn Resort's Las Colinas Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida. UDM has won the championship three times in the last five years (2010, 2013, 2014), while taking runner-up in the other two seasons.
