Complete ResultsNOTRE DAME, IND. (1/16/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team officially opened the spring season Saturday, falling at nationally-ranked Notre Dame, 7-0, from the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind.
Detroit (0-1) put up a solid fight in the season-opener, but could not overcome the veteran-laden Fighting Irish (2-0) roster.
The Titans battled tough in doubles, with
Chance Conley and
Griffin Mertz upending the Irish duo of Drew Dawson and Daniel Rayl, 6-4, from the No. 2 position. Tied 1-1 in doubles, the Irish earned the hard-fought doubles point with a 6-4 edge in the first position.
In singles action,
Kacper Stelmaszak gave the Irish's Brendon Kempin everything he could handle. Stelmaszak took the first set 6-4, before falling in a tough second set 6-4 (7-4). Kempin kept the momentum rolling in the third, ousting Stelmaszak 10-2.
The Irish flexed their muscle in others singles action, although Detroit saw strong performances out of
Patryk Koscielski,
Nathan Ponton and
Rafael Orantes.
Koscielski fell in a lengthy first set, 7-6, before dropping the second, 6-3, from the first position. Ponton and Orantes each put up a fight, but ultimately fell in two sets.
The Titans take a brief break before returning to action Saturday, Jan. 23 against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. from Dekalb, Ill.
