Complete Results DETROIT (1/22/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2016 spring season Saturday afternoon, downing UW Whitewater, 7-0, from Chick Evans Fieldhouse on the campus of Northern Illinois.
The Titans opened the match with a hard-fought 3-0 edge in doubles to pick up the first point of the day. Detroit flexed its muscle in singles, with all six Titans picking up wins in two sets.
With the win, Detroit improves to 1-1 in the early going of the spring season. Meanwhile, UW Whitewater drops to 1-1. The win is the first for head coach
Aaron Paajanen, who is in his first season at the helm for Detroit.

Patryk Koscielski and sophomore
Nathan Ponton opened doubles with a 7-6 win from the first position, before senior
Rafael Orantes and junior
Ismail Kadyrov edged the Warhawks, 7-6, from the second position. Junior
Chance Conley and freshman
Griffin Mertz picked up a 6-4 win from the third spot to give Detroit the clean sweep in doubles.
In singles, Koscielski earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over UWW from the first position, while Ponton picked up a pair of 6-2 wins from the second position.
Orantes and junior Kacper Selmaszak cruised to wins in the third and fourth positions, with Orantes winning 6-1, 6-1, and Stelmaszak rolling to 6-2 and 6-0 decisions.
Freshman
Nicholas Solarewicz edged the Warhawks 7-5 in the first set, before securing the point with a 6-3 decision in the second. Classmate
Adam Zychowicz gave Detroit a clean sweep with wins of 6-2 and 7-5.
The Titans return to action Sunday against Northern Illinois. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. from Chick Evans Fieldhouse in Dekalb, Ill.
