Titans Wrap Up Day One of Horizon League Indoor Championships

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/27/2016) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team opened competition at the 2016 Horizon League Indoor Championships, being hosted by Youngstown State University at WATTS.
 
Senior Colin Cashner finished third in the weight throw after a toss of 19.26 meters. Senior Jake Millyard recorded a personal record throw of 15.14 meters, followed y Nick Scalzi at 14.09 meters.
 
Sophomore Ben Kendell took the front running duties in the 5,000-meter run, but was caught by the pack and finished fourth after a time of 14:40.50. Senior Austin Wigent finished one out of the points in ninth with a time of 15:12.14. Senior Derek Gielarowski finished 11th at 15:17.61, followed by classmate Colin Creagh at 15:30.56.
 
In the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries, junior Ilia Panev is currently third with a time of 8.25. Panev scored in the long jump, placing eighth with a leap of 6.69 meters.
 
Junior Khalil Parris and freshman Carlton Sims are in second and third after the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash. Parris clocked in at 47.91, followed by Sims at 48.66, the seventh fastest mark in Titans history. Zach Arnold also added a personal record in the 400-meter after a time of 50.34.
 
Through four events in the heptathlon, freshman Jarod Hoekstra is ninth overall with 1,957 points, narrowly out of eighth-place.
 
Junior Brandon Wilks narrowly missed qualifying for the 60-meter dash finals, clocking in at 7.05, just .02 off the mark. Wilks also missed the 200-meter dash finals by just one spot after clocking in at ninth with a time of 22.24. Sims followed with a 22.52 time, good for 13th.
 
Freshman Anton Webster qualified for the 800-meter run finals after recording a 1:55.99 in the preliminary round.
 
The distance medley relay team of Charlie Felton, Arnold, Max Rogowski and Ryan Hofsess wrapped up the day with a fourth-place finish at 10:08.56.
 
Detroit is currently in fifth place with 17 points, five points back of fourth-place Milwaukee. Youngstown State leads the pack with 67 points, followed by Valparaiso in second with 41.
