YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/6/16) – University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field standout
Ben Kendell had a record-breaking day as the Titans wrapped up competition on the final day of the Youngstown State University National Invitational from the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Saturday.
In the 3,000-meter run, Kendell set an all-time Detroit record as he crossed the line in 8:22.31. Kendell's mark gave him the best time in the event by over eight seconds as he took first place in a field of 45. The mark tops the previous Titan record of 8:22.47, set by Patrick Liederbach in 2009.
Senior
Austin Wigent finished sixth with a 8:40.20 in the 3,000-meter run, followed by
Derek Gielarowski in 14
th at 8:47.09 and a personal record 8:52.20 by
Ryan Hofsess in 18th.
Through four events on Friday,
Jacob Whitting sat in 10
th place in the heptathlon with 2,242 points. On Saturday, Whitting returned to action with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles after clocking in at 8.58 and came in 10
th of the pole vault with a 2.95-meter (9'8") jump. Whitting wrapped up the heptathlon with a second-place finish and 2:49.88 mark in the 1,000-meter run. He finished in eighth place with 4,195 points.
Hoekstra highlighted his heptathlon performance with a fourth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run at 2:57.18 and finished with 3,125 points.
Zach Arnold led the Titans with a 50.74 mark and 19
th place finish in the 400-meter dash, followed by freshman
Carlton Sims in 23rd at 50.92 and
Colton Wirgau in 29
th at 51.11.
Brandon Wilks clocked in at 7.06 in the 60-meter dash, good for seventh in the event. Wilks also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing 23
rd among 63 participants at 22.91.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior
Ilia Panev checked in at fifth place with a time of 8.52.
Freshman
Anton Webster led the Titans in the 800-meter run with a ninth-place finish and time of 1:56.91. Senior
Joshua Carolin finished in 12
th with a mark of 1:57.21.
Detroit wrapped up the day in the 4x400-meter relay, where Webster, Sims, Wilks and
Khalil Parris finished third of 24 with a time of 3:18.72.

Khalil Parris and
Colin Cashner broke Detroit records as the Titans wrapped up competition on day one of the YSU National Invitational.
Parris broke a 22-year old Detroit record in the 500-meter dash and picked up a win in the process after finishing with a time of 63.22. The mark tops the previous Titan record that was set in 1994 at 63.32 by Jeff Robertson and also broke the WATTS facility record.
Cashner broke
Eric Lewis' 2013 record in the weight throw with a toss of 19.74-meters (64'11.25"). The all-time Detroit record gave Cashner a second-place finish at YSU.
Colton Wirgau was also in action in the 500-meter and finished 11
th with a time of 1:07.78.
Max Rogowski finished 10
th in the 1,000-meter run with a 2:38.75 mark.
In the distance medley relay, the veteran group of
Charlie Felton,
Zach Arnold,
Joshua Carolin and
Ryan Hofsess took second after clocking in at 10:17.26.
In the heptathlon,
Jacob Whitting set a personal record with a 7.63 mark in the 60-meter hurdles. Whitting backed it up with a 5.96-meter (19'6.75") long jump, 10.19-meter (33'5.25") toss in the shot put and 1.64-meter (5'4.5") leap in the high jump. Heading to day two, where the heptathlon will conclude, Whitting sits in 10th place with 2,242 points.
Jarod Hoekstra finished the first leg of the heptathlon with a time of 8.01 in the 60-meter hurdles, before a 18'4" leap in the long jump. Hoekstra recorded a shot put of 7.2-meters (23'7.5") and high jump of 1.73-meters (5'8") and has 1,945 points heading to day two.
In the 5,000-meter run,
Austin Wigent became the 10
th Titan to finish under 15 minutes and finished sixth with a time of 14:55.01.
Colin Creagh and
Derek Gielarowski finished just above the 15-minute mark at 15:04.54 (ninth) and 15:11.69 (13
th), respectively.
The Titans return to action in the YSU National Invite tomorrow at 10 a.m.
