HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (4/10/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at Northern Kentucky in Horizon League action from the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex in the Bluegrass State.
Due to impending rain, the teams agreed to play singles matches first, resulting in a 3-3 tie heading to doubles play. The Norse secured the win by taking the top two doubles positions.
The Titans picked up wins from
Nathan Ponton on the No. 2 line,
Adam Zychowicz at No. 4 and
Griffin Mertz from the sixth.
Ponton outlasted NKU's Jody Maginley in a three-set thriller. Ponton took an early lead with a 6-4 win in the first frame, before Maginley roared back with a 6-2 win in the second. Ponton responded with a resounding 6-2 win in the third to take the point.
Zychowicz got to work quickly and downed Court Clark 6-1 in the first and picked up the win by outlasting Clark by a 6-4 margin in the second.
Mertz dropped the opening set to Blaine Carr, 7-5, but took the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-4, to earn the Titans' third point of the day.
Patryk Koscielski suffered a singles loss from the top line for the first time in nearly a month, snapping a three-match win streak.
With the defeat, Detroit falls to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in Horizon League play. Meanwhile, NKU improves to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
The loss is Detroit's third consecutive by a 4-3 decision. The Titans are now 1-5 in matches decided by one point this season.
The Titans return home for the final two regular season matches of the season next week. Detroit hosts UIC on Saturday, April 16 before closing out with Valparaiso on Sunday, April 17.
