DETROIT (4/17/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team finished the regular season with a 6-1 loss to conference-leading Valparaiso University on Sunday morning from the Titan Tennis Courts.
The visiting Crusaders earned the doubles point with No. 85 Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Earnhardt defeating the Titans' top line of
Patryk Koscielski and
Nathan Ponton, 6-3, and a hard fought 7-5 win over
Griffin Mertz and
Kacper Stelmaszak at No. 3 doubles.
The duo of
Chance Conley and
Ismail Kadyrov led a comeback charge to go ahead 6-5 at No. 2 doubles, but the match went unfinished as the Crusaders clinched the point.
In singles, Valparaiso flexed its muscle with wins at No. 1-5 singles.
Mertz highlighted the day for Detroit with a dramatic three-set victory from the sixth singles position. The freshman earned a 6-3 win in the opening set before falling in the second, 5-7. Mertz bounced back and outlasted Michael Savaglio, 10-7, in the decisive third frame.
The Crusaders improve their record to 18-5 overall and extend their Horizon League lead with a 4-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Titans wrap up the regular season at 3-16 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
