Virginia Challenge I
Al Owens Classic
DETROIT (4/23/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team placed eight in the top-10 of both the Virginia Challenge and the Al Owens Classic on Friday and Saturday.
With a couple of weeks remaining before the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, the Titan men continued to round into form with strong performances at the two weekend meets.
VIRGINIA CHALLENGE
61 different U.S. colleges and universities were represented at the Virginia Challenge on the campus of the University of Virginia, with more than 1,200 student-athletes in competition.
Junior
Khalil Parris was in action on Friday in the 400-meter dash and finished 15
th after legging out a mark of 48.01.
Parris was back at it on Saturday and clocked in his second-best 400-meter hurdle at 51.59. The mark was the fourth-fastest time at the Virginia Challenge.
Senior
Colin Cashner recorded a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw after a toss of 65.07 meters (213'6").
Sophomore
Ben Kendell improved on his program record time in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in 13
th place in a field of more than 30 at 29.56.52.
AL OWENS CLASSIC
More than 20 teams descended upon the campus of GVSU for the Al Owens Classic.
Carlton Sims finished second in the 200-meter dash with a run of 22.04. Sims also finished 11
th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.04.
Brandon Wilks gave the Titans a second top-10 finisher in the 200-meter dash with a ninth-place run of 22.42.
Junior
Ilia Panev placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a season best time of 15.11. Panev also saw action in the 400-meter hurdles and recorded a time of 59.58.
Joshua Carolin led the Titans in the 800-meter run in ninth at 1:54.16, followed by
Anton Webster's personal record time of 1:54.81 and
Ryan Hofsess at 1:56.29.
In the 1,500-meter run,
Charlie Felton led the Titans with a fifth-place run of 3:57.01.
In the shot put,
Nick Scalzi recorded a toss of 14.34 meters (47') to lead Detroit with a 12
th-place showing. Scalzi also led Detroit in the discus throw with a toss of 41.60 meters.
Max Rogowski and
Andrew Heitzhaus each set personal records in the 800-meter run with times of 1:57.25 and 1:57.79, respectively.
The Titans picked up a top-five finish in the 4x100-meter relay as Panev, Sims,
Zach Arnold and Wilks crossed the line in 42.35, good for fourth in the event.
Arnold led the Titans with a run of 52.25 in the 400-meter dash, followed by
Joe Harmon at 53.60.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Webster, Arnold, Carolin and Harmon finished seventh with a time of 3:23.36, just off a top-five pace.
