SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (1/28/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over Duquesne in its home opener Saturday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
The Titans secured the doubles point to begin the match and took four of six singles matches to pick up the victory.
Chance Conley and
Nathan Ponton teamed up from the second position to take the first doubles match, 6-3.
Adam Zychowicz and
Kacper Stelmaszak dispatched the Dukes' pair from the third position, 6-2, to seal the doubles point for the Titans.
Duquesne took the first singles point, but
Artem Vasheshnikov was overpowering from the second position and pushed the Titan lead to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The visiting Dukes answered with a win from the fourth position to even the score at 2-2 and needing two of the three remaining singles matches, the Titans went to work.
Ponton pulled away for a 6-3, 6-2 win from the third position to get things rolling for Detroit Mercy.
Senior
Patryk Koscielski battled through a cut finger and roared back for a three-set win from the top line. After a 6-1 defeat in the opening frame, Koscielski bounced back to take the match with 6-3, 6-2 wins in the final sets.
Stelmaszak was the last man on the court and emerged victorious to push the final margin to 5-2 in favor of the Titans. Stelmaszak responded from a 6-3 defeat in the first set with a gutty 7-6 win in the second. He would take the match with a 6-3 win in the third.
Detroit Mercy continues the home stand next weekend with a pair of matches against Wayne State and Northwestern Ohio. The Titans host the Warriors on Saturday at 5 p.m. and the Racers on Sunday at 6 p.m. Both matches will be held at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich.
