BUFFALO, N.Y. (2/10/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team was edged, 4-3, by the University of Buffalo on Friday afternoon from the Miller Tennis Center.
The contest was back-and-forth all afternoon, with the Bulls taking the doubles point and the first singles match to go ahead 2-0.
Freshman
Marie Maitrot started the rally for Detroit Mercy with a 6-4, 6-3 win from No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Iris Thioux followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 win from No. 4 singles to level the match at 2-2.
Buffalo again took the lead with a victory on the top singles line, but freshman
Ksenia Providokhina took No. 6 singles in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2, to knot the score at 3-3.
The match would come down to the fifth position and
Nynke Van Der Goot. The senior was edged in the first set, 7-5, but answered with a 6-2 win in the second. Van Der Goot was unable to complete the comeback, however, with a grueling 6-4 defeat in the decisive third frame.
The Titans see their three-game win streak erased with the defeat, falling to 3-3 on the season. Meanwhile, the Bulls improve to 2-0 with the victory.
Detroit Mercy returns to action at Bowling Green State University on Friday, February 17. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. in the Buckeye State.
