SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (2/18/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team overpowered Illinois State in a 7-0 win on Saturday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
The Titans earned the doubles point and swept all six singles decisions to record the shutout victory.
In singles, sophomore
Adam Zychowicz was edged in the first set, 5-7, before answering with a convincing 6-1 win in the second. Zychowicz outlasted Matias Chomali, 12-10, in a grueling third frame to take No. 5 singles.
Newcomer
Artem Vasheshnikov also recorded a three-set, come-from-behind victory from the top line. Vasheshnikov fell in the opener, 2-6, before earning hard fought wins of 6-4 and 7-5 in the final sets to seal the sweep for Detroit Mercy.
Senior
Patryk Koscielski cruised to a straight-set victory from the second line with wins of 6-3 and 6-2.
Junior
Nathan Ponton had little trouble from the third position, taking the match 6-3 and 6-1.
Senior
Kacper Stelmaszak added a straight-set win of his own from the fourth line with a pair of 6-3 victories.
Illinois State played a man down, but it would not matter after Detroit Mercy's strong showing.
With the win, the Titans improve to 3-5 on the season. The Redbirds, meanwhile, fall to 4-5 on the year.
Detroit Mercy returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 22 against Toledo. The match is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. from Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
