SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (2/3/17) – Senior Nynke Van Der Goot came up with a grueling three-set victory to propel the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team to a thrilling 4-3 win over Toledo in the Titans' home opener on Friday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
 
Van Der Goot's win took nearly three hours of back-and-forth action, but the senior was able to gut out a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 victory to break a 3-3 tie and give the Titans the decisive point.
 
The Titans took the doubles point to open the affair, but the Rockets stormed back with the first two singles points and three of the first four to take a 3-2 lead over Detroit Mercy.
 
Needing the final two points, the Titans went to work. Freshman Ksenia Providokhina edged Claire Aleck, 7-6 in the first set, before rolling to a 6-0 win in the second to even the match at 3-3 and set up Van Der Goot's dramatics.
 
The doubles point was hard-fought, with neither team giving an inch. Toledo landed the first punch with a 6-1 win from the top doubles line, before Marie Maitrot and Pauline Van Herck evened the score with a 6-4 win from the second position. The third pairing of Iris Thioux and Van Der Goot came through with a gutty 7-6 win to take the point for the Titans.
 
Thioux provided the Titans third singles victory with a win in straight sets from the fourth position.
 
Detroit Mercy improves to 1-2 with the win, while Toledo falls to 3-3.
 
The Titans will have to bounce back quickly with a Sunday night matchup with Northwestern Ohio. The contest is set to begin at 6 p.m. from Franklin Athletic Club.
