Women’s Tennis Hosts EMU, GVSU This Weekend

DETROIT (3/16/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team opens a four-game home stand this weekend against Eastern Michigan and Grand Valley State. The matches will be the Titans' last nonconference opponents prior to the start of Horizon League play on Apr. 1.
 
Detroit Mercy hosts the Eagles on Friday night at 8 p.m. and the Lakers on Sunday night at 6 p.m. Both matches will be held from Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.

SCOUTING THE TITANS
The Titans enter the weekend at 3-7 overall and will look to end a five-game skid. Detroit Mercy won three straight against Toledo, Northwestern Ohio and Niagara and sat at 3-2 prior to the stretch of tough games. The Titans are 2-1 from home this season.
 
Senior Nynke Van Der Goot leads the squad with 10 singles wins and is 6-3 from the fourth and fifth positions. Classmate Anna Davydova has six singles wins, including three from the top line. Sophomore Iris Thioux is 7-6 with six wins from the third and fourth positions. Van Der Goot and Thioux lead the Titans with seven doubles wins apiece.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Eastern Michigan is 4-9 on the season and has yet to win on the road in eight tries. The Eagles snapped a three-game skid with a 6-1 win over Chicago State last time out. Marie Mayerova has 10 singles wins with six coming from the top line, while Anna Veleva has a team-best 11 singles wins while playing primarily from Nos. 4-5. Andrea Martinovska and Mayerova lead the doubles pairings with 14 wins.
 
SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Grand Valley enters the weekend boasting a 15-5 overall record. The Lakers had won five of six before falling to Saint Leo in their most recent matchup. Madison Ballard leads the team with eight wins from the top singles line, with Alexa Sweeney adding 12 wins from No. 2. Nicole Heiniger has a team-high 16 wins while playing from Nos. 3-6. In doubles, Livia Christman and Abby Perkins have dominated with a 20-2 record.
 
ON TAP
Following this weekend's action, the Titans continue the home stand as they open Horizon League play against Milwaukee (Apr. 1) and Green Bay (Apr. 2).
