Men’s Tennis Set for Flyers, Hoosiers This Weekend

DETROIT (3/24/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team hits the road this weekend to take on Dayton and Indiana on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 25-26.
 
The Titans square off with the Flyers on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio, before heading to Bloomington, Ind., to take on the 35th-ranked Hoosiers at 6 p.m.

SCOUTING THE TITANS
Detroit Mercy defeated Chattanooga, 4-1, in the most recent outing to improve to 3-2 during the current seven-game road trip. The Titans also added wins over Chicago State and Eastern Illinois, while falling to Mercer and Kennesaw State. Detroit Mercy is 2-6 on the road this season.
 
Sophomore Artem Vasheshnikov leads the team with a 15-6 singles record, while junior Nathan Ponton is 12-6 in singles. Senior Patryk Koscielski has 10 singles wins, followed by sophomore Adam Zychowicz with nine singles wins. Vasheshnikov has won his last three singles decisions and joins Zychowicz at 6-4 over the last 10 matches. Senior Chance Conley leads the team in doubles wins with 10, followed by Koscielski and Vasheshnikov with eight apiece.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers enter the weekend at 10-8 overall and 3-0 in the A10. Dayton has won five of their last six and is 6-4 at home this season. The Flyers are 1-2 against Horizon League opponents this season with a win over Wright State and losses to Youngstown State and NKU. Jordan Benjamin has seen most of the action from the top singles line and is 10-5 overall. Zach Berry has a team-high 18 singles wins, with Carsten Fisher and Simon Jayaram each tallying 13. The pairing of Berry and Fisher has dominated doubles to the tune of a 16-5 record.
 
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana enters the weekend at 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are ranked 35th in the latest ITA Team Rankings and have split the last four, with wins over No. 32 Washington and Purdue, and losses against No. 18 Cornell and Texas Tech. Antonio Cembellin leads the team with 14 singles wins, followed by Bennett Crane with 13 and Matthew McCoy with 12.
 
ON TAP
Following this weekend's action, the Titans return home to begin Horizon League play against Green Bay on Sunday, Apr. 2.
